QuickBooks: items and Inventory: Company Preferences ...

The Items and Inventory?section of the preferences section is an important part of QuickBooks. However, it is only important if you are dealing with a company that sells items. Service companies do not need to work much with this screen, QuickBooks Items and Inventory Part 1unless they are looking to turn inventory options off in QuickBooks. Here is a run down of the options in the Company Preferences?section. We will continue this description in further part 2, and we will be detailing the Advanced Inventory Settings on this page in a later post.

  • Inventory and Purchase Orders are Active
    • Check this box if you use inventory in your business. It will give you access to the items and inventory features in QuickBooks. If you do not check this box, then most of the rest of the Items and Inventory screen will be grayed out.
  • Warn about Duplicate Purchase Order Numbers
    • Checking this box will cause a warning message to display if you try to enter a purchase order with an order number that is already in your QuickBooks company file.
  • When Calculating Quantity Available for my inventory, deduct:
    • Quantity Reserved for Pending Builds
      • This option will take away any inventory that is needed for filling a pending build order. A pending build order is an order that could not be filled due to lack of inventory. So if you have a pending build order, checking this option will automatically deduct the inventory needed to fill the order.
    • Quantity on Sales Orders
      • Checking this box will make it so that uninvoiced items on sales forms will not show in the Available Inventory screen.

Iran poised for big nuclear jump

Iran is poised to greatly expand uranium enrichment at a fortified underground bunker to a point that would boost how quickly it could make nuclear warheads, diplomats tell The Associated Press.

They said Tehran has put finishing touches for the installation of thousands of new-generation centrifuges at the cavernous facility ? machines that can produce enriched uranium much more quickly and efficiently than its present machines.

While saying that the electrical circuitry, piping and supporting equipment for the new centrifuges was now in place, the diplomats emphasized that Tehran had not started installing the new machines at its Fordo facility and could not say whether it was planning to.

Still, the senior diplomats ? who asked for anonymity because their information was privileged ? suggested that Tehran would have little reason to prepare the ground for the better centrifuges unless it planned to operate them. They spoke in recent interviews ? the last one Saturday.

The reported work at Fordo appeared to reflect Iran's determination to forge ahead with nuclear activity that could be used to make atomic arms despite rapidly escalating international sanctions and the latent threat of an Israeli military strike on its nuclear facilities.

Story: What would happen if Iran did get the bomb?

Fordo could be used to make fissile warhead material even without such an upgrade, the diplomats said.

They said that although older than Iran's new generation machines, the centrifuges now operating there can be reconfigured within days to make such material because they already are enriching to 20 percent ? a level that can be boosted quickly to weapons-grade quality.

Their comments appeared to represent the first time anyone had quantified the time it would take to reconfigure the Fordo centrifuges into machines making weapons-grade material.

Video: US cautiously optimistic over potential Iran talks (on this page)

In contrast, Iran's older enrichment site at Natanz is producing uranium at 3.4 percent, a level normally used to power reactors. While that too could be turned into weapons-grade uranium, reassembling from low to weapons-grade production is complex, and retooling the thousands of centrifuges at Natanz would likely take weeks.

The diplomats' recent comments came as International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors are scheduled to visit Tehran on Sunday. Their trip ? the second this month ? is another attempt to break more than three years of Iranian stonewalling about allegations that Tehran has ? or is ? secretly working on nuclear weapons that would be armed with uranium enriched to 90 percent or more.

Strait of Hormuz: Iranians, smugglers and fireworks

Diplomats accredited to the IAEA expect little from that visit. They told the AP that ? as before ? Iran was refusing to allow the agency experts to visit Parchin, the suspected site of explosives testing for a nuclear weapon and had turned down other key requests made by the experts.

Iranian officials deny nuclear weapons aspirations, saying the claims are based on bogus intelligence from the U.S. and Israel.

But IAEA chief Yukiya Amano has said there are increasing indications of such activity. His concerns were outlined in 13-page summary late last year listing clandestine activities that either can be used in civilian or military nuclear programs, or "are specific to nuclear weapons."

Among these were indications that Iran has conducted high explosives testing and detonator development to set off a nuclear charge, as well as computer modeling of a core of a nuclear warhead. The report also cited preparatory work for a nuclear weapons test and development of a nuclear payload for Iran's Shahab 3 intermediate range missile ? a weapon that could reach Israel.

Iran says it is enriching only to make nuclear fuel. But because enrichment can also create fissile warhead material, the U.N. Security Council has imposed sanctions on Tehran in a failed attempt to force it to stop.

More recently, the U.S., the European Union and other Western allies have either tightened up their own sanctions or rapidly put new penalties in place striking at the heart of Iran's oil exports lifeline and its financial system.

The most recent squeeze on Iran was announced Friday, when SWIFT, a financial clearinghouse used by virtually every country and major corporation in the world, agreed to shut out the Islamic Republic from its network.

Diplomats say the choke-holds are being applied in part to persuade Israel to hold off on potential military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities ? among them Fordo, a main Israeli concern because it is dug deep into a mountain and could be impervious to the most powerful bunker busting bombs.

Diplomats told the AP earlier this month that Iran had added two new series or cascades of old-generation IR-1 centrifuges to its Fordo operation, meaning 348 centrifuges were now operating in four cascades.

Olli Heinonen, who retired last year as the IAEA's chief Iran inspector, recently estimated that these machines, and two other cascades at Natanz can produce around 15 kilograms (more than 30 pounds) of 20-percent enriched uranium a month, using Iran's tons of low-enriched uranium as feedstock.

The low and higher enriched uranium now being produced "provides the basic material needed to produce four to five nuclear weapons," Heinonen said.

But he suggested "an altogether different scenario" ? a much quicker pace of enrichment to levels easily turned into weapons-capable uranium if Iran starts using newer, more powerful centrifuges at Fordo. That, said the diplomats, is exactly what Iran appears to be on the verge of doing by finishing preparatory work recently for new centrifuge installations.

Fordo, which can house 3,000 centrifuges, was confidentially revealed to the IAEA by Iran in 2009, just days before the U.S. and Britain jointly announced its existence.

Iran announced last year that it would move its 20-percent uranium production to Fordo from Natanz and sharply boost capacity. It started making higher grade material two years ago saying it needed it to fuel a research reactor.

But the U.S. and others question the rationale, pointing out that Iran rejected offers of foreign fuel supplies for that reactor and is making more of the higher-enriched material than that small reactor needs.

AppSumo

I can't even remember how I used to learn before the ubiquity of the Internet. I don't mean academic learning?although in light of sites like Khan Academy (4 stars), we're getting pretty close?but the day-to-day knowledge that I need to do my job and get by in life. YouTube taught me how to knit. With Lynda.com (4 stars), an Editors' Choice for online learning, I picked up some invaluable photography techniques. AppSumo?(prices vary; some free) is the latest addition to my learning toolkit, and it's an interesting if hard-to-grasp hybrid, offering daily deals for technology products as well as videos that teach principles that are central to tech-minded businesses.

The site itself is a little rough around the edges, as are the production standards for some of the video content, but the content is killer. Organization isn't the site's strong suit either, though it's been getting better little by little over the few months that I've had my eye on it. AppSumo has excellent content and very good deals on niche software tools?the kind of stuff you didn't even know you needed?if you can find it.

What AppSumo Offers
It took me some time to suss out what AppSumo sells, exactly, and first-time visitors to the site or those who sign up for the daily newsletter may feel the same. The name isn't exactly descriptive, and neither is the homepage. To summarize, AppSumo has daily deals on niche software products that you can buy through AppSumo and (usually) redeem from the provider with a code. It also has learning content in the form of videos, ebooks, and other digitally-distributed packages. All the software and learning content are suitable for people who work in the technology field to some capacity, which includes online marketing, website development, e-retail, and social media managers.

Prices
Some of AppSumo's content, like ebooks and small software products, are free. The website has an entire section of Free Deals that remains well stocked. Other purchases vary widely in price.. For example, the Social Media Krash Kourse, a series of videos that explained how to use Facebook, Twitter, Google Analytics, and SEO as a business, costs a mere $27. Another package of content, 35 Email Template to "Wow" Your Contacts & Get Results, is currently going for $35. An hour session with startup advisor Andrew Chen, however, costs $699 through AppSumo. Some of the deals are essentially consulting sessions, which explains why at 50 percent off, An Hour with Chief Sumo Noah Kagan (one of AppSumo's founders, who consults about growing one's business) still goes for $1,000. Considering what you might pay for one-on-one consulting, many of the deals offer enormous savings. The crash-course learning content also packs into a few short hours the same things you (or your employees) might spend several hours teaching yourself. Calculate what your own time costs, hourly, multiply that by the number of hours you might spend searching online for articles and tutorials from which you might learn the same things (say, roughly anywhere from two to six hours), and see for yourself what the cost-benefit might be for buying a course through AppSumo.

The software deals seem to be offering real discounts, most being at least 50 percent less than the advertised retail price, but it's tough to go into AppSumo knowing what app you need to buy and finding it. A better idea is to keep an eye on the newsletter to see if the kinds of tools you need surface.

Libyan Sufis mark Prophet's birthday despite tension (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Libyan Sufis staged a joyous parade through the heart of Tripoli on Saturday to mark the Prophet Mohammad's birthday, defying radical Salafi Muslims pressuring them to scrap the centuries-old tradition.

Chanting hymns to the beat of drums and cymbals, marchers choked the narrow alleys of the walled old town to celebrate the feast of Mawlid, a favorite event for the pious Sufis whose spirituality is an integral part of North African Islam.

The celebrations were the first since the fall last August of Muammar Gaddafi, who kept religion under firm control during his 42-year dictatorship, and went ahead despite concerns that hardliners might attack the marchers as heretics.

The tension between the traditional Sufis and the Salafis, a group influenced by Saudi Wahhabis and other ultra-conservative foreign Islamists, has become a key divide in Libyan politics as parties begin to form to contest free elections in June.

"We fought the tyrant (Gaddafi) because he was a dictator and we don't want anyone like him to govern us again," said biology teacher Mohammad Aref. "We are the majority."

Emhemed Elashhab, the sheikh (Islamic scholar) at one Islamic school where marchers assembled, said there were fewer than 2,000 violent Islamists in Libya. "All normal people are against their ideas," he said.

EITHER BATS OR THIEVES

Sufism, a mystical strain among both Sunnis and Shi'ites, dates back to Islam's early days. Apart from the standard prayers, Sufi devotions include singing hymns, chanting the names of God or dancing to heighten awareness of the divine.

Sufis also build shrines to revered holy men and scholars and make pilgrimages to them. Hardline Islamists consider these practices grave sins that must be stopped, by force if needed.

One night last month, extremists bulldozed through a wall of an old cemetery in the eastern city of Benghazi, destroyed its tombs and carried off 29 bodies of respected sages and scholars. They also demolished a nearby Sufi school.

"The extremists have taken advantage of the lack of order," said Jamel Abdul Muhi, a Sufi in Tripoli. "Those who work in the dark are either bats or thieves. They are cowards."

In Benghazi, hundreds of Sufis marched to a main square flanked by 30 armed militiamen for security. Jumaa Mohammad Al-Sharif, an Islamic school teacher, said the procession was also a protest against last month's grave desecrations.

"We caught some people who destroyed the zawiya (Islamic school) and disrespected the graves and handed them over to the authorities, but we were surprised when we later learned they had been released," he said.

Hisham Krekshi, deputy chairman of the Tripoli Local Council, expressed satisfaction the march was taking place peacefully despite concerns about reprisals from hardliners, who spread pamphlets in recent days urging people to shun the event.

"This has been around for 14 centuries, you can't stop it," he said in one of the main souks, where the gold traders and cloth merchants had shut their shops for the day.

INCENSE AND ALMOND MILK

Festivities in Tripoli began with Sufi devotions in traditional Islamic schools in the old town. At Zawiya Kabira, the largest one, men chanted rounds of rousing hymns in an incense-filled room while other distributed almond milk and biscuits to those outside.

Boys lit firecrackers as lines of men danced out of the school and down the alleys, with women watching from balconies and doorways as the procession passed.

"Beloved Prophet of God, be the enemy of all His enemies," was one of the slogans they chanted in Sufi-style repetition.

At one point, marchers spilled out onto Martyrs Square, the old Green Square where Gaddafi used to address his supporters.

Najat Al-Mughrabi, waiting with other women at a corner to watch their sons march by, said she was not afraid of the extremists. "They couldn't do anything before (under Gaddafi), how can they do anything now?" she asked.

Even if the Mawlid holiday passes without incident, Sufi leaders say they remain concerned because many post-Gaddafi religious officials have Salafi leanings and have been appointing like-minded imams to mosques around the country.

Salafi preaching is also widespread on Libyan television and radio, they say, which raises concerns among Sufis that they are being outflanked by a new and more political form of Islam.

Sudan's Bashir says tensions with South could spark war (Reuters)

KHARTOUM (Reuters) ? Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said Friday tensions with South Sudan over oil transit payments could lead to war between the two countries.

Asked in an interview with state television whether war could break out with South Sudan, Bashir said: "There is a possibility."

He said Sudan wanted peace but added: "We will go to war if we are forced to go to war."

"If there will be war after the loss of oil it will be a war of attrition. But it will be a war of attrition hitting them before us," he said.

South Sudan took away much of Sudan's oil production when it split away from Khartoum as an independent country in July. Oil is the lifeline of both economies.

The landlocked South still needs to export its crude through the north's port and pipelines. But the two countries went their separate ways without agreeing how much South Sudan was going to pay Sudan to use its oil infrastructure.

The crisis came to a head when Khartoum said in January it had seized some southern oil as compensation for unpaid fees. South Sudan responded by shutting down oil production.

Bashir accused Juba of shutting down the oil flow to provoke a collapse of the Sudanese government. Khartoum has been fighting an economic crisis since the loss of southern oil, sparking small protests against high food prices and corruption.

Bashir said it was clear Juba did not want to reach an oil deal after his southern counterpart Salva Kiir had refused to sign during a meeting with him a proposal made by the African Union in Addis Ababa last week.

"They (the South) didn't sign and they will not sign," Bashir said, adding that Khartoum was entitled to 74,000 barrels of day of southern oil. Juba pumped 350,000 bpd prior to the shutdown.

"This is our right," he said.

There was no immediate comment from Juba. Kiir said on Thursday he had rejected the deal in Addis Ababa because it would have required the South to pay billions of dollars to Khartoum and keep exporting crude through Sudan.

South Sudan wants to develop an alternative pipeline to Kenya to bypass Sudan's facilities but oil insiders are skeptical the project is viable.

ECONOMIC CRISIS

Bashir said the economic situation was difficult for Sudan this year but the country would boost current oil production of 115,000 bpd by 75,000 bpd. Sudan's current output serves only domestic consumption.

Bashir said Sudan would also export gold worth $2.5 billion this year and expand the agricultural sector to compensate for the loss of oil. Experts have expressed doubts that raising gold exports and other plans to diversify the economy will offset the loss of oil revenues of $5 billion booked in 2010.

They say economic diversification has been hampered for years by corruption, misplanning and a U.S. embargo in place since 1997 for hosting militants such as Osama bin Laden in the past.

Apart from oil, the north and south also need to mark the 1,900 km (1,200 miles) long border and find a solution for the disputed region of Abyei. Khartoum also wants Juba to share Sudan's external debt of $38 billion.

Both countries regularly trade accusations of supporting rebels on each other's territory.

Self Defense Street Fighting ? ?Women's Self Defense? Doesn't Exist!

Once, while being interviewed about street fighting based self defense, I totally shocked the interviewer by stating a simple fact that shook his belief system from the very foundation.

His question was: ?What would you recommend or what do you personally teach women in terms of self defense??

My answer was: ?There is no such thing as women?s self defense.?

Now that doesn?t mean at all that women cannot or should not learn to defend themselves, on the contrary, it means that I give women more credit than even they give themselves!

What I mean when I say that women?s self defense doesn?t exist is that there should not be a difference between the way a woman defends herself and the way that a man defends himself.

Read these five reasons why street fighting based self defense works and how they are just as applicable to women as to men:

1.

Street fighting based self defense works just as well against bigger attackers-Women?s self defense supposedly has to be different from self defense for men because women tend to be smaller and weaker. Well, I weigh 175 lbs and work as a bouncer. Can you imagine that I have ever been attacked by a smaller guy? Neither can I. Now, if I weigh 175 lbs and street fighting based self defense allows me to defend myself against someone 100 lbs heavier, why can?t a woman use the same concepts to defend herself against a much bigger man?

2. Street fighters aren?t afraid to strike first-A surprise attack by a bad guy is called a sucker punch. A good guy used a preemptive strike. Either way, it is the same thing, a way to take an attacker out before he even knew he was in a fight. What do you think would be a better choice for a woman to do, wait for an attack and try to block and fight back or to suddenly knock a potential attacker down and out before he attacks, as soon as she feels threatened and knows that there is no way to avoid a fight.

3. Street fighters practice very good situational awareness-As a bouncer, I am constantly trying to see a fight before it starts, to be able to respond before things really get out of hand. A mugger or rapist spends time observing potential targets before he chooses the easiest mark. How can so many ?women?s self defense? instructors tell their students to run away from a fight if they don?t give them the tools to notice a potential threat before it is too late? If your situational awareness, or your ability to see a potentially threatening situation coming and react before you are ambushed or attacked is on point, you won?t ever have to fight at all.

4. Street fighters have conquered their fears and don?t back down from anything-Ever hear of the concept of the ?cornered rat?? Well, rats are nature?s masters of street fighting self defense. Just like a rat, a good street fighter becomes much more dangerous when cornered and endangered. Bite, claw, give your attacker(s) everything you?ve got and die fighting because being afraid and giving-up didn?t ever win a fight or save a life.

5. Street fighters don?t train-Since developing my concepts of street fighting based self defense, I train much less than ever before in my life and am much more combat effective than ever before in my entire life. How should a working mom or business man find time for work, family, household and the hours of conditioning and technique training that most self defense or martial arts instructors claim are necessary to ensure your street survival? How about spending a few hours to learn a few brutally effective concepts of dirty street fighting and then having them for the rest of your life, on call to be used any time without maintenance training? Like I always say, if a technique is simple enough to use with minimal training, it is simple enough to use effectively on the street. If a technique is complicated enough to need to be drilled constantly, it is too complicated for use in a real street fight.

Scandal brings sudden fall for Conn. police chief (AP)

EAST HAVEN, Conn. ? The police chief of the embattled city of East Haven is expected to retire this week with a severance package estimated at more than $100,000 ? even though the police commission unanimously recommended Tuesday that he be fired and prevented from collecting anything more than his pension.

It may end up Chief Leonard Gallo's last victory in a career that has weathered twists and turns ? often with a little help his powerful friend, Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. ? and made headlines out of proportion to this seaside suburb of 28,000 residents.

Gallo's lawyer acknowledges his client could be indicted as part of an investigation that has already resulted in the arrest of four police officers and found a pattern of discrimination against Latino residents.

Gallo's woes, Maturo's notorious quip last week about eating tacos as a way to help disenfranchised Hispanics, and the murky role of the two leaders' relationship in the town's history of scandal have sharply divided East Haven, an Italian-American bastion that has experience an influx of South American immigrants in recent years.

"We must be the laughing stock of America," said Fran Raucci, pointing to television news cameras outside the town hall this week. "I'm so embarrassed to say I'm from East Haven."

Resident Linda Depino, meanwhile, said that she supports the police department and Maturo, and that anyone who does not like the town is free to leave.

"I think we have a damn good mayor," she said. "They put more nails in him than they put in Jesus."

The four arrested officers are accused of harassment of Latinos that included beatings, false arrests and unnecessary searches in East Haven, which is about 90 percent white. They face charges including deprivation of rights and obstruction of justice; all four have pleaded not guilty.

The indictment says the defendants were protected by a leader identified as co-conspirator 1 ? a reference to Gallo, according to his attorney ? who turned away efforts to investigate the men's conduct, threatened potential witnesses and ordered that police commissioners not be allowed in the station without his approval.

His attorney, Jon Einhorn, said that the allegations are not true and that if Gallo is charged, he will be vindicated.

Gallo, now 64, became East Haven's chief in 1998 after leaving the police department in neighboring New Haven, where he had been put in charge of the dog pound after a falling-out with new leadership.

By many accounts he became close friends with Maturo, a former firefighter who hired him. Together, they weathered several episodes of racial friction, including NAACP criticism of a police shooting that killed a black man.

This is not Maturo's first stint as East Haven mayor. He was first elected in 1997 but lost a close race in 2007. Gallo proved to be a shrewd infighter in clashes with the new mayor, Democrat April Capone Almon, who had criticized the police department during the campaign.

Almon was arrested by town police in July 2009 and accused of interfering with police who were towing cars at a beach. Several media outlets have reported that her arrest is now under review by a federal grand jury.

But when Almon put Gallo on administrative leave in April 2010, citing a federal investigation into the department, it was the new mayor who paid a political price.

Gallo insisted the suspension was politically motivated, filing a lawsuit accusing Almon of a "personal vendetta." The police union voted no confidence in Almon, and dozens of people demonstrated outside town hall in July to protest what they called a lack of support for the police department. Last November, Almon lost an election rematch with Maturo by a couple dozen votes.

"It was a determining factor in the election," said Paul Hongo, a deputy director in Almon's administration, who said polling data indicated voters were unhappy with the handling of the police department.

Almon has declined to comment, but Hongo said she had been frustrated that the community did not accept her explanations of the severity of the situation. He said a handful of powerful people managed to lead the town astray by casting the issue as a political dispute.

"I think now the community is starting to see, `Wow, there was really something here,'" Hongo said.

Within days of returning to office, Maturo reinstated Gallo as chief. FBI agents had raided Gallo's locked office less than two weeks earlier.

The mayor continued to stand by Gallo after the blistering report from the civil rights division of the U.S. Justice Department in December that accused East Haven police of systematically discriminating against Latinos.

Investigators also blasted the department for outdated policies and a lack of supervision. Still, when the officers were arrested on Jan. 24, Maturo said the town has "a great police department," although he faced more criticism for saying he would eat tacos as a way of doing something for the Latino community.

In announcing Gallo's retirement earlier this week, Maturo praised Gallo and as a devoted public servant who made a selfless decision to resign.

Maturo is not obligated to follow the commission's recommendation that Gallo be fired and is expected to ignore it.

Syrian troops push back in fight on Damascus edges (AP)

BEIRUT ? Syrian forces pushed dissident troops back from the edge of Damascus in heavy fighting Monday, escalating efforts to take back control of the capital's eastern doorstep ahead of key U.N. talks over a draft resolution demanding that President Bashar Assad step aside.

Gunfire and the boom of shelling rang out in several suburbs on Damascus' outskirts that have come under the domination of anti-regime fighters. Gunmen ? apparently army defectors ? were shown firing back in amateur videos posted online by activists. In one video, a government tank on the snow-dusted mountain plateau towering over the capital fired at one of the suburbs below.

As the bloodshed increased, with activists reporting more than 40 civilians killed Monday, Western and Arab countries stepped up pressure on Assad's ally Russia to overcome its opposition to the resolution.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the British and French foreign ministers were heading to New York to push for backing of the measure during talks Tuesday at the United Nations.

"The status quo is unsustainable," Clinton said, saying the Assad regime was preventing a peaceful transition and warning that the resulting instability could "spill over throughout the region."

The draft resolution demands that Assad halt the crackdown and implement an Arab peace plan that calls for him to hand over power to his vice president and allow creation of a unity government to pave the way for elections.

If Assad fails to comply within 15 days, the council would consider "further measures," a reference to a possible move to impose economic or other sanctions.

Moscow, which in October vetoed the first council attempt to condemn Syria's crackdown, has shown little sign of budging in its opposition. It warns that the new measure could open the door to eventual military intervention, the way an Arab-backed U.N. resolution led to NATO airstrikes in Libya.

A French official said the draft U.N. resolution has a "comfortable majority" of support from 10 of the Security Council's 15 members, meaning Russia or China would have to use its veto power to stop it. The official said Russia had agreed to negotiate on the draft, but it was not yet clear if it would be willing to back it if changes were made.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with department rules.

The Kremlin said Monday it was trying to put together negotiations in Moscow between Damascus and the opposition. It said Assad's government has agreed to participate; the opposition has in the past rejected any negotiations unless violence stops.

Western countries cited the past week's escalation in fighting to pressure Moscow.

"Russia can no longer explain blocking the U.N. and providing cover for the regime's brutal repression," a spokeswoman for British Prime Minister David Cameron said, on customary condition of anonymity in line with policy.

The United Nations estimated several weeks ago that more than 5,400 people have been killed in Syria's crackdown on the uprising against Assad's rule, which began in March. It has been unable to update the figure, and more than 200 people have been killed in the past five days alone, according to activists' reports.

Pro-Assad forces have fought for three days to take back a string of suburbs on the eastern approach to Damascus, mostly poorer, Sunni-majority communities. In past weeks, army defectors ? masked men in military attire wielding assault rifles ? set up checkpoints in the communities, defending protesters and virtually seizing control.

Late Sunday, government troops retook two of the districts closest to Damascus, Ein Tarma and Kfar Batna, said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the London-based head of the Syrian Human Rights Observatory, which tracks violence through contacts on the ground.

On Monday, the regime forces were trying to retake the next suburbs out, pounding neighborhoods with shelling and heavy machine guns in the districts of Saqba, Arbeen and Hamouriya, he said.

At least five civilians were killed in the fighting near Damascus, according to the Observatory and another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees.

Regime forces also heavily shelled buildings and battled dissidents in the central city of Homs, one of the main hot spots of the uprising, activists said.

The Observatory reported 28 killed in the city Monday. The Local Coordination Committees put the number at 27.

The reports could not be independently confirmed. Syrian authorities keep tight control on the media and have banned many foreign journalists from entering the country.

The Syrian Interior Ministry, in charge of security forces, said Monday that its three-day operation in the suburbs aimed to track down "terrorist groups" that have "committed atrocities" and vowed to continue until they were wiped out. Damascus had remained relatively quiet while most other Syrian cities have slipped into chaos since the uprising began.

Regime forces, backed by tanks and armored vehicles, heavily outgun and outnumber the defectors, organized into a force known as the Free Syrian Army. However, the military can't cover everywhere at once, and when it puts down the dissidents in one location, they arise in another. The dissidents' true numbers are unknown.

The result has been a dramatic militarization of a crisis that began with peaceful protests demanding the ouster of the Assad family and its regime. The army defectors began by protecting protesters, but over the weeks they have gone more on the offensive.

The dissidents have seemed increasingly confident in hit-and-run attacks.

On Monday, they freed five imprisoned comrades in an assault on a military base in the northeastern province of Idlib, the Observatory and Local Coordination Committees reported. Other defectors attacked a large military checkpoint outside Hama, destroying several transport trucks and claiming to kill a number of troops, the two groups said.

Six government soldiers were killed in an ambush on their vehicles in the southern region of Daraa, the state news agency SANA reported. The Observatory reported two other soldiers and 10 defectors killed in fighting elsewhere.

Attackers also blew up a gas pipeline near the border with Lebanon, SANA reported, the latest in numerous attacks on Syria's oil and gas infrastructure.

Because of the upsurge in violence, the Arab League halted a month-old observer mission, which had already come under heavy criticism for failing to stop the crackdown. The League turned to the U.N. Security Council to throw its weight behind its peace plan, which Damascus has rejected.

The move resembles the turn of events before last year's NATO air campaign in Libya, when Western countries waited for Arab League support before winning U.N. cover for intervention.

But so far, there has been little appetite for a similar campaign in Syria. There is no clear-cut geographical divide between the regime and its opponents as there was in Libya, and the opposition is even more divided and unknown than it was in the North African nation. Syria is intertwined in alliances with Iran, Hezbollah and Palestinian militant groups, and borders Israel ? making the fallout from military action more unpredictable.
