WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- When he was shot, Trayvon Martin was not the baby-faced boy in the photo that has been on front pages across the country. And George Zimmerman wasn't the beefy-looking figure in the widely published mugshot.
Both photos are a few years old and no longer entirely accurate. Yet they may have helped shape initial public perceptions of the deadly shooting.
"When you have such a lopsided visual comparison, it just stands to reason that people would rush to judgment," said Kenny Irby, who teaches visual journalism at the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The most widely seen picture of Martin, released by his family, was evidently taken a few years ago and shows a smiling, round-cheeked youngster in a red T-shirt. But at his death, Martin was 17 years old, around 6 feet tall and, according to his family's attorney, about 140 pounds.

Zimmerman, 28, is best known from a 7-year-old booking photo of an apparently heavyset figure with an imposing stare, pierced ear and facial hair, the orange collar of his jail uniform visible. The picture, released by police following the deadly shooting, was taken after Zimmerman's 2005 arrest on an assault-on-an-officer charge that was eventually dropped.
In a police video made public this week of Zimmerman being brought in for questioning a half-hour after the shooting, the 5-foot-9 man appears much slimmer.
In a case that has caused a nationwide furor over race and the laws of self-defense, Martin was shot to death by Zimmerman in the city of Sanford on Feb. 26 as the unarmed black teenager was walking back from a convenience store.
George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon Martin, had gotten into an altercation with an officer several years ago. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.
Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer whose father is white and whose mother is Hispanic, has claimed self-defense, saying he opened fire after Martin punched him in the face, knocked him to the ground and began slamming his head on the sidewalk.
Black leaders and others are demanding Zimmerman's arrest on murder or manslaughter charges, but state and federal authorities are still investigating.
Betsi Grabe, a professor at Indiana University-Bloomington who has studied the effect of news images on public opinion, said photos that gain the most traction play into the desires of both journalists and the public for a story with a distinct victim and aggressor.

"At the center of most stories we tell in our society, cross-culturally and across the centuries, is the struggle between good and evil," she said. "If the ingredients are there, that is what journalists will grab onto and present."
Grabe said it is natural to present the most innocent-looking image of the person believed to be the victim, and the most menacing one of the suspect.
A more complex portrait of the two figures has emerged since then. A photo of a beaming Zimmerman looking sharp in a jacket and tie has come out, along with a more recent picture of Martin, with gold teeth and a white sleeveless undershirt. At the same time, it was learned that Martin had been suspended from school for marijuana residue in his backpack.
George Zimmerman's brother spoke out for the first time Thursday night, defending his brother's actions in the killing of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin and saying that medical records will back his account of the shooting. NBC's Ron Allen reports.
The Associated Press has not been able to verify the sources or creators of what are purported to be more recent photographs of Martin circulating online and elsewhere. The family's attorney has not released the photos.
"Everyone's views seem to be gyrating back and forth with each new scrap of evidence that comes out," said David O. Markus, a prominent Miami defense attorney. "This is why we have courts and juries, and why the process is slow. No one should rush to judgment."
Gordon Coonfield, a communications professor at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, said the early perceptions of Zimmerman as a vigilante may ultimately have no bearing on the case.
He cited the case of Rodney King, the black motorist beaten two decades ago by white Los Angeles police officers in an episode captured on video. The officers were acquitted in state court, though two were later found guilty on federal charges.
"I think the nation felt quite certain it saw the truth of what happened to Rodney King, and the DA tried the case as if the images spoke for themselves," Coonfield said. "Yet the state criminal court decided the images were not self-evidently true. The defense won by offering a more convincing explanation of the images, focusing on what could not be seen - officers' motives, reasoning, and judgment."

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Mo. ? Officials at a St. Louis hospital on Thursday defended their actions in the case of a homeless woman who sought treatment for a sprained ankle and died in police custody after being arrested for refusing to leave the emergency room.
An autopsy determined that Anna Brown's death in a jail cell in September was caused by blood clots that formed in her legs and migrated to her lungs, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The newspaper also obtained surveillance footage of the woman's final moments. In the video, officers are seen carrying Brown into a jail cell. The cell door closes and Brown is heard moaning and crying.
Brown's family says authorities treated the 29-year-old mother of two unfairly and have hired a St. Louis-based lawyer, Keith Link. Link did not respond to telephone messages from msnbc.com on Thursday.
St. Mary's Health Center says its staff followed medical guidelines and performed appropriate tests, acknowledging the ?outrage being expressed in this tragic event.?
?Unfortunately, even with appropriate testing using sophisticated technology, blood clots can still be undetected in a small number of cases,? according to a statement released by St. Mary's Health Center on Thursday. ?The sad reality is that emergency departments across the country are often a place of last resort for many people in our society who suffer from complex social problems that become medical issues when they are not addressed. It is unfortunate that it takes a tragic event like this to call attention to a crisis in our midst.?
Police have said officers had no way of knowing Brown's dire condition.
Brown went to three hospitals complaining of leg pain in the days leading up to her death, including her visit to St. Mary's that led to her arrest for trespassing. She was wheeled out in handcuffs after a doctor said she was healthy enough to be locked up.
Brown had been struggling after a series of devastating setbacks, family say.
'Starting to? make progress'
A New Year's Eve tornado in 2010 destroyed Brown's home in north St. Louis home, the Post-Dispatch reported. She and her two children moved to Berkeley, a St. Louis suburb, and she lost her job at a sandwich shop soon afterward, the Post-Dispatch said.
According to the Post-Dispatch, her utilities were shut off because she stopped paying her bills, and after a child welfare agent who visited the home in April found a feces-filled toilet, burn marks on the floor where she had lit fires to keep warm and other distressing signs, Brown was arrested for parental neglect. Police reported at the time that she seemed confused, the newspaper reported.
Her mother, Dorothy Davis, received custody of Brown's children on the condition that Brown couldn't also live with them, and Brown's home was condemned, the newspaper reported. She lived in four homeless shelters from May until September, according to the Post-Dispatch.
Brown joined the St. Louis Empowerment Center, a drop-in center for the mentally ill, the newspaper reported.
"She was just starting to make progress," Kevin Dean, a peer specialist at the center, told the Post-Dispatch.
Dean and another staff member at the drop-in center recalled hearing Anna Brown say she hurt her ankle.
Davis, who said Brown called every day to check on her children, said she wants answers about her?daughter's death.
"If the police killed my daughter, I want to know. If the hospital is at fault, I want to know," Davis told the Post-Dispatch. "I want to be able to tell her children why their mother isn't here."

?During the Duchess?s speech, she said she regretted the absence of her husband, Prince William, who is finishing military training in the Falkland Islands.
??What you have all achieved here is extraordinary," the Duchess said during her speech. "You as a community have built the Treehouse -- a group of people who have made every effort to support and help each other.?
?She noted the support the Treehouse and other East Anglia Children?s Hospices (EACH) facilities offer for families.
??For many this is a home from home?- a?lifeline?enabling families to live as normally as possible during a very precious?period of?time,? the Duchess said.
The Duchess is the royal patron of the Hospices, which helps families with children who have a life-endangering sickness. The organization provides therapy for the children, support for parents and family members and other services, offered at their centers or in the family?s home. The Treehouse will be the service center for Suffolk and Essex.
During her visit, she received a tour of the building and met children and their families who receive services from EACH, including 10-year-old Bethany Woods, who has been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Woods performed the song ?Rainbow Connection? for the Duchess, who congratulated Woods after her rendition, according to the Daily Mail.
?A reception was held for EACH staff members and those who have supported the organization. According to the Daily Mail, the Duchess told another person attending the reception, ?I find doing speeches nerve-wracking.?
?She also planted a tree at the facility in commemoration of her visit.
The Duchess has been the royal patron of EACH since January and is also a supporter of the Scouts organization, planning to attend camps with the Girl Scout troops in north Wales and London and assist with games. The royal family has traditionally been a supporter of the Scouts, and Queen Elizabeth serves as the association?s current president. The Duke of Kent, the queen?s cousin, is its patron.
?The Duchess also serves as a patron for the National Gallery, the organization Action Through Addiction, which helps those with a drug addiction and their loved ones, and the Art Room, a charity which attempts to help children?s self-image through art.

LONDON (Reuters) - Iranian oil exports have fallen significantly in March, industry sources said on Friday, as some buyers stop or scale back purchases to abide by Western sanctions aimed at slowing Tehran's nuclear program.
Crude exports from Iran appear to have fallen this month by around 300,000 barrels per day (bpd), or 14 percent, according to estimates from industry consultant Petrologistics and a leading European oil company. A source at a third oil company said it too had noted a decline in Iranian exports.
It is the first sizeable drop in oil shipments from the OPEC producer since the European Union announced in January plans to embargo Iran's crude from July and Washington and Brussels sanctioned Iran's central bank.
Oil prices rose on the news, with Brent crude jumping to as high as $127.06 a barrel, up $3.96 and just $20 short of an all-time high reached in 2008. Prices later eased to $125 a barrel.
"This is fundamentally very bullish," said Mike Wittner, head of commodities research at Societe Generale in the United States. "I think Iranian exports are going to go down much more, as the sanctions bite. It's a logical reaction for the market to go up on this."
According to Petrologistics, a Geneva-based oil industry consultant, Iranian exports may amount to 1.9 million bpd in March, down from about 2.2 million bpd in February.
A source at an oil company, which still deals in Iranian crude, said the evidence pointed to an overall drop in shipments in March, seeing a decline of at least 300,000 bpd mainly because European customers are taking less.
European buyers of Iranian crude including France's Total have already stopped buying the oil, which is subject to European Union sanctions from July 1. Royal Dutch Shell, is scaling back.
"We are taking less and less - very few barrels," said an official with a European oil company, until earlier this year one of the larger EU buyers of Iranian crude.
TANKER TRACKING
A trading source at another European oil firm also estimated Iranian exports were falling from levels earlier in the year.
"I do see the month to date lower than February," the source said. "I just don't know where March will finish."
Petrologistics is one of a number of companies which estimates oil output by tracking tanker shipments, because Iran, like many big oil exporters, does not routinely disclose how much it is supplying on a timely basis.
Iran's oil exports are difficult to track and, like those of other countries, they can fluctuate week by week. With a week to go in March, it is possible the picture may change.
"We are struggling to get the numbers nailed down," said an industry official.
Oil prices have climbed from around $107 a barrel at the end of 2011 as the tighter Western sanctions on Iran threaten to choke off its exports.
"There are definitely signs that buyers of Iranian crude are shy about buying and have been, in their search for replacement crude, bidding up the price," said Edward Morse, global head of commodities research at Citigroup.
That means, as one industry official noted, that higher prices are compensating Iran for the loss of exports and that measures designed to punish it mean it now sells fewer barrels at higher prices.
Some oil industry officials say Saudi Arabia is increasing shipments to compensate for lower Iranian supplies and to lower prices, which may lead to Saudi output climbing above 10 million bpd.
Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday its March output was around 9.9 million bpd, its highest in decades.
An Iranian oil official, asked on Friday to comment on whether exports had fallen, referred to remarks earlier in March by Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi who said shipments were unchanged from last year.

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. -- The bodies of a mother and her four children were found Thursday inside a central Arkansas duplex.?Authorities were investigating whether they were killed by smoke inhalation from an overnight fire that was extinguished before firefighters arrived.
A maintenance worker found the bodies around 7 a.m., about an hour after firefighters first knocked on the door to follow up on a neighbor's report of smelling smoke. Nobody answered and thermal imaging didn't detect any sign of a fire from outside, so the firefighters left without entering, Jacksonville Fire Battalion Chief Bob Thornton said.
Firefighters had three engines deployed to a nearby house fire, which they believed to be the source of the smoke smell at the duplex, Thornton said. They were dispatched back to the duplex after the bodies were found and saw extensive smoke damage inside. Thornton said a fire might have burned overnight and "smoldered itself out."
Thornton said authorities didn't suspect foul play but hadn't confirmed the cause of death for Marilyn Beavers, 31; her son Dequan Singleton, 11; and daughters Sydni Singleton, 9; Haylee Beavers, 7; and Emily Beavers, 4.
Arkansasmatters.com reported?that Furlandare Singleton,?who is the kids' father, is a truck driver who was out of town at the time of the blaze.
"I really loved my kids and my family," he told the?website.?"They meant the world to me. I think God blessed me with some of the most wonderful kids in the world."
Phil Nix, the executive director of the Jacksonville Housing Authority, said the maintenance worker found the bodies in their bedrooms and saw extensive smoke damage in the kitchen.
"The damage was around the stove and the cabinets beside the stove," Nix said. "Evidently, something was cooking and caught fire."
Jacksonville police spokeswoman April Kiser said there was smoke and soot damage throughout the duplex and in the ventilation system but no fire damage to the outside of the duplex.
Friends said the Beavers family had just been approved for a new house and were planning to move soon. Barbara Brooks said her friend had even asked for help packing.
"She was so excited," Brooks said. "She said it was a new step in her life."
Her oldest child, Dequan, was a football standout who often played in the field near the home, his godfather, Kirk Green, said.
"I got the call this morning and I couldn't believe it," said Green, who lives nearby. "The last thing I heard him say was he called me and said we were going to get together this weekend and we're going to the park."
'He was a good kid'
Jaylen Washington, 16, said his 11-year-old friend also played basketball but was particularly passionate about football.
"I told him he couldn't play football, and then he proved me wrong," Washington said. "He was a good kid. He wanted to go to the NFL and everything."
Brooks said the mother would often take her children to the skate park or the circus.

The converting option requires processing on Nuance's Web service, and creates a Word, Excel, or WordPerfect version of the file you upload. It also needs a password, and its result is sent to an email address you specify. The recipient can download the file if he or she has your password. When I tested this by converting a 6MB PDF to Microsoft Word format, the 5.26MB result was mostly correct, though some text from images turned out garbled. Adobe has a similar service.
Another capability you get with Adobe Reader is the ability to digitally sign PDF documents. But the Nuance product can store your contacts' digital signatures so you can verify that a doc comes from them. Foxit can also verify digital signatures, but Adobe, the inventor of the technology, is the clear winner here, since it lets you create digital signature as well as just verify others'. Nuance PDF Reader told me that a sample signature was invalid.
Nuance PDF Reader lets you email documents using your default mail client from within the app, but Adobe Reader does this too, and offers its SendNow service for large files, but you'll have to pay a monthly fee (starting at $9.99) for files over 100MB. Foxit goes this one better, with Facebook and Twitter sharing built in.
Performance
