Qatar Airways To Philadephia, Adis Ababa, Clark ? Civil Aviation ...

Qatar Airways to Philadephia with 777's-- just now from QR's official Twitter account.

It will start services to Adis Ababa (Finally!) and to Clark Manila Airport as well!

Announced in the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai...!

Philadephia, surprising choice.

Edited: for comments.

Huge news for PHL. Certainly shows the value of the city to AA also.

Starting Clark in competition with EK will be interesting.

Is there a date, or is this yet another "someday", along with ATL, BOS, DTW...?
Really, are they going to drop JFK?
This route is going to flop, a 77W from PHL to Qatar?..
QR is seemingly playing catch up with EY and EK.
That said, however, their network is very extensive.
How about adding DBN to the mix? Get some actual competition for EK and their 77W's.

With PHL becoming an AA hub why is it surprising ? More logical then Charlotte for an airline like Qatar. Its the big east coast airports which get most of the international flights from the Middle East airlines.

Not EY: it has 74 non-stop destinations while QR has 118 and EK has 119. All based on the specific date 12th May 2013.

EY non-stop destination breakdown:

Domestic: 1 (i.e, AUH)
Africa 8
Asia Pacific 33
Schengen Europe 7
Other Europe 8
Latin America 0
Middle East 13
North America 4

QR:

Domestic 1 (i.e., DOH)
Africa 19
Asia Pacific 41
Schengen Europe 18
Other Europe 13
Latin America 2
Middle East 19
North America 5

EK:

Domestic 1 (i.e, DXB)
Africa 21
Asia Pacific 38
Schengen Europe 20
Other Europe 13
Latin America 3
Middle East 15
North America 8

In terms of non-stop freight destinations: EY 29; EK 44; and QR 45.

EK recently added CRK as well and will start operations from October 1, 2013. Who will be first? QR or EK?

Is there really that opportunity? I'm serious. Are EK's pre-sales going that well? Or is this a bluff?

Will the Philippines open up more airports? It would help their economy...

Before the 9W/EY partnership, it was EY trailing... Now QR will (future tense) feel the heat. The code share destinations in India will *really* help EY.

Thank you for the numbers. EY definitely has catching up to do. I hope the 9W scissor hub works as well as envisioned. But EY has definitively been the 3rd place mid-east airline. I'm shocked how few African and European destinations EY has. Do you know a reason? To improve EY's visability, the EY/9W scissor hub will have to add dozens of routes!

Lightsaber

Cool! This opens so many possibilities out of PHL by connecting in DOH.

Because PHL cannot support service to NRT, PEK, PVG, HKG, GIG, GRU, EZE etc.. but it can support Qatar with a 77W?

Appparently it can.

Is PHL going to be daily or sub-daily?

Please note that these data are shifting rapidly for all ME3 carriers.
On 15 May 2013, EY adds 1x Europe Schengen destination AMS to reach 75 total destinations.
On 15 June 2013, EY adds 1x Europe Other destination BEG to reach 76 total.
On 4 September, EK adds 1x Europe Schengen destination ARN to reach 120 total

While new codeshare destinations are rising particularly rapidly for EY with its cooperation agreements.

Certainly a surprise route for PHL. Though I would have expected an 787, a 77W does seem like it could be too much plane for the route.

Why the 777 is there a large freight market out of PHL? Are we certain its a 77W and not a 77L I would have thought something the size of a 787 would have been more suited to the route.

I still can't believe QR will be adding routes prior to the opening of the new airport... I just can't see where they keep finding the space.

While I would have expected Boston to come before Philly, I think the statement above is pretty unfair. ORD cant support EZE or GIG and has QR. I think PHL can support NRT although nothing has materialzed.

PHL bleeds a lot of traffic to EWR. They probably can capture much more O&D and with the connections provided, fill the plane nicely.

Have they confirmed it will 77W and not a 77L?

Couldn't they do it with a 787? Do they need a 777w?
Quoting STT757 (Reply 12):

Now PHL will have (more) one stop options to the Far East and S/SE Asia. The new airport in Doha should be another plus.
I think the logic of the PHL flight is for connections within the US. In JFK, they could concentrate on O&D traffic from NYC to DOH and beyond, while in PHL they could 1) have the advantage of being the first international flight to the Middle East/Asia and 2) connect passengers thru PHL instead of "wasting" JFK seats that are probably more valuable selling them NY passengers.

Huh? Where did that question come from???

With QR in OW along with AA who has bought US Airways, the PHL mega hub will allow it to tap into many other U.S. markets indirectly through code share service AA-QR. This new route is definitely not to capture O&D traffic but mainly for transfer traffic.

From the on set, yes it does not warrant a daily B77W operated service but the way in which QR will aggressively market the service along with being a preferred carrier flying directly out of PHL it should be able to support a daily B787 or B77L easily.

According to this article, it expects to launch PHL from 2014 most likely Summer 2014 http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/05/0...ar-airways-plans-philadelphia.html

Also remember QR is not alone in selling this flight, as AA too shall be code sharing on this new route and will contribute significantly from its end as well. One thing is for sure, UPENN and other university students in the PHL area will definitely appreciate the alternative option on offer by QR versus flying BA/LH/AF/UA etc. From PHL to the Indian Subcontinent/GCC region, I reckon LH's market share will be negatively impacted the most with the arrival of QR.
