Catholic Church Helps Hundreds of Central Coast Residents Gain Temporary Legal Status

May 7, 2013

The Catholic church has helped hundreds of Central Coast residents without immigration documents escape the threat of deportation.

With the assistance of Catholic Charities, more than 300 people in the Central Coast have gotten temporary legal status and work permits through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, according to a statement from the nonprofit.

?Many of these youth and young adults came to Catholic Charities because their parents came here in the past for immigration and assistance,? says Terrie Iacino, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Monterey. ?We are both proud of these young people and we honor them.?

Religious organizations locally and nationwide have been leaders in pressing for immigration reform.

There are an estimated 499,000 people eligible for the Deferred Action program in California and about 22,350 people eligible in the Central Coast, the statement says.
